I really want to be a music major or at least be a part of in while in college. But a degree in music is not going to be able to support, especially if I want to move to new york and travel. Could I double major in Music and accounting or music and pharmacy. If I minored in music what kind of classes would I take. Could I get a music scholarship and still take accounting or pharmacy colleges or if I got an academic scholarship could I take music classes??
Do you “really want to be a music major…” to learn 4 semesters of music theory, sight singing, class piano/voice; a couple semesters of music history and form and analysis; some serious applied study on your primary instrument with weekly required recital attendance and a faculty jury each semester; some courses in conducting, arranging, composition, etc….?
Or do you simply want to be in band/orchestra/choir and maybe take some private lessons?
The former requires a serious and huge commitment that will take most of your time and energy. The latter, any college student can do and major in whatever they want.
If you don’t have confidence enough in your ability to get a degree in music for your future support – you may not want to follow that path. Being a professional performing musician is incredibly demanding and you’ve got to be the best to make it.
On the other hand, I know a lot of accountants, lawyers, doctors, teachers, businessmen, etc… that also play music because they love the music. You don’t need a degree in music for that.
I’d suggest you examine what you want to do as your career – how you will spend the majority of your adult life – and get a degree in that. Unless, of course, you’re rich and don’t need a job. Then it doesn’t matter what you major in and music is as good as any.

I did a double degree in music performance together with an English Lit degree, but the music portion of it was a breeze because I already had my teacher’s AR by the time I entered university and the courses were basically GPA boosters. I did have to double my course load (8 courses a semester) and exam time was nuts, but otherwise it was do-able.
