Tough decision -- A laptop or an iPod Touch?

Okay, I’m in high school and I DESPERATELY need a laptop. All my schoolwork is on it, especially typing up reports and watching videos. If I don’t have a laptop, I can work on our family computer but it’s really distracting; there is always loud old music playing and the area it is in is distracting.
Then again, I can get an iPod touch. I don’t listen to music 24/7, but I do listen a lot. It also bothers me whenever the teachers say that we can listen to our iPods during class and everybody has one, and I am the only one listening to nothing. Also, when I go to India this summer, I need something to listen to my music on, because the computers don’t always work and then I can’t listen to music on the computer. If I had an ipod touch, then I could listen to a bunch of my songs.. especially on the flight to and from India and at the airports. The laptop wireless connection wouldn’t work there.

Should I get a laptop for my educational purposes for high school which I could only use at school or should I get an Ipod Touch for my music which I could use anywhere?

I would get a proper mp3 player. I would try one of the creative range. Get some sennheiser in ear headphones for better sound. That way when you are using the family computer, you can drown out the old music.

I want to get a new laptop soon and I’ve managed to narrow it down to 2 choices. The new Toshiba Qosmio X500-10T Gaming laptop (priced at £1600), or the Sony Vaio AW41ZF (priced at £1400).
Sony is a great brand, so that’s one positive point it has. But there’s many features the Toshiba Qosmio has which this new Sony doesn’t. It has 8GB memory, Sony only has 4GB. It has a backlit keyboard, subwoofer, fingerprint reader and touchpad with multi-touch control. One thing that lets the Toshiba down is that it has only 1.6GHz processor, although it reaches 2.8GHz in turbo mode, but I’m not too sure what that means. The Sony has a 2.8GHz Duo Processor T9600. I’m pretty sure the Sony laptop has the better processor. It also looks more stylish and has a far better brand name on the back. But I’ve had a Sony already, and you can’t really see much difference from a cheap Sony and an expensive one. The Toshiba Qosmio looks expensive and I’ve never seen them around. But you see Sony laptops everywhere, and they don’t seem so special anymore. Which laptop do you think is the best, which would you go for? Here’s the specs for both of them, and pictures too:

My entire post assumes that you are a gamer: if you are buying a $ 2,300 dollar computer simply for word documents, just stop reading this post and go buy a mac or something.
I would also consider battery life and weight- as a gamer you probably won’t have much need for a battery, but you never know when it’ll come in useful.
The fingerprint reader is essentially useless- I uninstalled the software eventually because it was so annoying. Also, If you plan on extended periods of straight gaming, you should head to a computer store and test their usability. The palmrests on some laptops tend to get hot over time, which is super-uncomfortable. Aside from all that, I would go with the one that has the better processor/memory combo, just because it makes for better gaming.

There are two MAIN schools of thought. One, get a great toughened unit like the dells or panasonics that the special forces guys use. That is expensive and if you’re only using it for music, movies and a few light games, it is a waste of money.

The other school of thought would be get a computer that is virtually disposable. You are in an area of high likelihood of physical damage to an electronic device and as you know “accidental damage” is not covered under a warranty. Even if wasn’t accidental shipping to an APO is REALLLY SLOW. If you buy a year or two year old computer for 100-150, it really wouldn’t matter too much if it got damaged and you had to buy a new one. Just get a used computer of any brand EXCEPT emachines. acer or gateway.

A good intermediate option would be to get a cheap used dell latitude or other BUSINESS CLASS laptop. They are much more rugged and reliable than a consumer class laptop and they will be cheap so if you lose it or it gets damaged, no big deal. Just make sure it has a dvd drive and dvd decoding software before you buy it. MOST business class machines lock out the ability to play movies because they want their employees to work, not to be messing around. Even if it doesn’t have it you can switch out the drive, but with deployment coming up, why make things harder than it needs to be.

yet a fourth option would be to get a computer with an “accidental damage insurance policy”. As you have unfortunately found out, accidental damage is NOT covered by a warranty. The insurance or “complete care” costs alot, but might be good in your line of work.

we have had a hard time with our internet having vista too. that is the suckiest thing to ever have on a computer. but good luck with that. (vista makes me so angry.)

Vista wireless is transparent if you have an open system on the router end. If you right click on the Icon on the right side of the taskbar and select view available networks, there should be a list of what is in the area. Select yours and click on connect. If there is security set up on the router, it will open a menu and ask for the password. If it won’t get a signal and allow access, then it may be locked out by the settings. Go to Start.Control Panel/Networks and on the right side select Manage Network Connections. The installed devices will be displayed. You should only have one device active at one time. Right click the wireless device and select Properties. Double click on the TCP/IP4. In there, make sure both sections are set to automatic. OK out and should connect. The drivers for the wireless should be updated since there are several that have been released in the past few weeks. Some of the newer systems are very sensitive to interference from nearby units. May want to change your routers channel to a higher number to get away from others and set up security on it to avoid anyone from getting to your system and files.

What brand and model laptop is the best?

With so many different brands and models out there, I was wondering if anybody knew of any fast, tough, and good laptop. I need one for a class I’m taking this summer and have no clue what to pick. It doesnt have to be fancy or anything but I don’t know who to trust or what to pick. My sister bought a GBook by Mac and it totally crashed after a year and a half.. Max price around $ 500-$ 700. If anybody could give me some brands and models that would be great!

I like the Toshibas. Any one of them. My son took his with him overseas in the military and it has seen some abuse. It still works 100%. No issues at all!

quad core laptop.Let me start by saying, YES, im an idiot. Yesterday I bought the $ 350 Gateway Laptop on sale at Bestbuy. I got home and opened it, within 2 minutes, I saw how much slower it was then other budget $ 350-$ 400 laptops, and packed it up to return it. I want to return it, but I don’t feel like catching the 15% restocking fee, is there any other way to return.

I sealed the security label back with crazy glue, and it looks perfectly sealed, but the top of the sticker looks mangled and distorted, like you can tell it was opened. If you do the further research you’ll find that lenovo’s were specifically designed for rough use. They have an active protection system built in that protects the components when it detects that you’ve dropped the laptop, sort of like how an airbag works in a car. HP’s don’t have the best reputation for quality laptops, but they’ve improved in build quality lately so in the end its your choice.

if you can gently pop the keys off and take a q-tip and clean underneath then pop them back on. i hope it helps

how do you fix a laptops mouse button?

There is a small membrane or metallic spring like thing that pops the button back up under the laptop mouse buttons. It seems to me that this has either been moved so that it is slightly offset or in a worse case, this could be broken.

I’ll be doing video editing and maybe some small videos with the webcam if it doesn’t have sync problems. Will they all perform the same for the most part? 500GB of memory is plenty, I want the fastest for the most part.

The HP. They are very reliable

Get a Toshiba Sattalite book because they are worth the money, they are reliable, durable, and the cost b/w $ 500 – $ 700 depending on the features.

If you are willing to pay bit more then you should get a dedicated graphics card from Nvidia or ATI Radeon on a Toshiba or Sony. As per ratings the quality of HP and Dell Laptops are down and they break easily. IBM Lenovo also builds robust products that last long. I DO NOT recommend Gateway Laptops to anyone as they are far more fragile and have a very bad customer service.

If you want to pick from the above then the HP should be a better choice. You do not need 6GB of RAM as an average system uses 2 GB and pushing it would utilize upto 3.5 GB only.

Note: USB 3.0 will not make your existing USB devices faster!!! You need a USB 3.0 compatible device like an external passport HDD which supports USB 3.0 to utilize it or else it will act as a regular USB 1.0 or 2.0 port.

Laptops: how long do they last with normal use - which brands are the toughest?

I’ve never had a laptop before, always desktops, and I was wondering how durable they are – i’ve got a samsung r20 plus – payed around £400 for it at the time.

Usually about 2 years but all depends on the build quality and how careful are you with it.
There isn’t a better brand, a top end model from a lesser known brand can be more powerful, more reliable and cheaper than a big name entry level model. There can be differences in quality even from the factory that has manufactured them so a correct answer is impossible.

Anywhere to get answer to tough questions?

I have a few tough questions that never get answered here, so does anyone know a good place to ask a semi-technical question? Of course if no one answers this question within ten minutes of its posting then I have no hope.

The question, if you need to know, is why can I only burn CD’s on my laptop and not on my two desktops? It’s probably real simple but I can’t figure it out.

There is a site that I have used called Cha Cha (chacha.com). You can text questions to them from your phone or go to their website and type in a question. It’s free and they will get you an answer within ten minutes. I use them now instead of calling 411. Usually they give accurate information. Good Luck!

laptop computer ratings.So here is the problem… I have a laptop with a broken Fn key. What I am trying to do is to plug an external monitor into my laptop and obviously use that instead of the laptop monitor. The problem is I can’t get the picture to switch over without the Fn key. Switching the picture over requires Fn+F12 combo. And as far as I know you cannot remap the Fn key… Isn’t there some way I can switch the picture over from the desktop? Instead of the key combo? The function key implements functions at the hardware level. You won’t find any options anywhere to do the same things as those function keys. Without that function key, you’re out of luck. You’ll need to get a new keyboard.

If you are running Vista, this can be achieved without an Fn key.

1. Click on your Battery Icon, which is located in the System Tray (Next to Clock)
2. A Pop-Up should come up, displaying three options, choose “Windows Mobility Center)
3. An External Monitor Option should be displayed, choose which monitor you want to show.

For XP: (Edit)
1. Right click on desktop
2. Select Properties
3. Find the display settings (Where you change resolutions etc.)
4. From the tab, there should be a drop-down box, see if you can temporarily make it your “Default” monitor.

Yes, even if you have Windows XP computer spaz is right you have to do it through your display settings by right clicking in properties from desktop and then settings tab and then select monito. Make sure to have wires connected before going to settings. Your tv should be recognized as a monitor and switch to it.

It depends on the laptop, some have 2 slots on the bottom that are very easy to get to underneath a cover

others have 1 slot on bottom and 1 underneath the keyboard.

It is too risky for the average person to open up a laptop and accomplish anything positive.

It is very simple. The memory sticks are under a door on the bottom side of your laptop. You undo a Phillips head screw and remove the door and the RAM is right there. It will cost whatever your RAM costs. Go to;

I would use a portable hard drive. I have an 80 GB and its the best thing ever. Frees up laptop of media files and other stuff to. Also its portable. I spent 100 buck with a 50 mail in rebate. Its a Maxtor.

What system is it? If its an Advent there are three little clips that release the keyboard you can see them under the space bar. Remover the two little screws covering a chrome plate insert memory at a slight angle a press down until you here a clip. It takes me around 10 min but a friend can fit you them in an incredible 4min.

When comparing individual models in the G series, they do appear to be budget laptops…. not only in the MSRP, but in the processor speed offered, hard drive size and speed offered, and most of them have either Intel GMA or ATI Radeon 4200 for a video chipset.

Consider for a moment. You are mulling over buying an Acer. Even their BEST machines are not as good as a budget Toshiba

In the end, how good a laptop is will depend on how you treat it, and how good the manufacturer is at handling defects. Lenovo took over a solid product line from IBM. Acer… does not have a good track record from any angle.

Now.. the MSI CX420X? It has a better processor and better video chipset than the G460 (smaller drive though). As to reliability… Lenovo has a better track record.

believe it or not, there are plenty of tough lab tops out there that can take a beating and still work. I think they are built with some kind of shock absorbing plastic, the problem is that some of them are very expensive. If you are really concerned, get an extended warranty. But if you can afford them, they are worth it.

My friend came to me with a problem, and I don’t quite know what to tell her. She is beginning an internship tomorrow, and she and the lady that will be her boss during the internship, have already gotten off to a wrong start. First of all, she is requiring that for this internship, my friend have transportation and a laptop. My friend had neither of these things, and could not possibly afford a car, so she explained the situation and the lady was fine. However, the laptop was a must, so my friend took out a loan and bought a new laptop. The problem is, she had to start her internship several weeks late until she had the money to buy the laptop, because her supervisor did not want her to come into work without a laptop. So now, the lady has complained to my friend’s Professor in school (internship is a required class course), and my friend is scared to go to the internship at all now because she thinks the lady hates her. If you were her, would you quit or suck it up and go?
The problem is if she quits then it will cause her to fail the class, but if she stays, then she runs the risk of having a boss that thinks she’s incompetent. She is really stressed about this, and I have no idea what to tell her. What would you do?

NO job and NO grade is worth your health. If she is indeed wrapped that tight perhaps withdrawing and trying it again next semester is the answer. On the other hand she needs some exposure to a hostile workplace. I know I covered all bets. Not really. If there is any way she can tough it out that is what she should do. All I am saying is that if she is sick all the time the process will do her no good. So she should try to work through it. She will be better for it in the long run.

She’s come this far, she has the laptop, so she should stick with it. Maybe once she gets to know the lady things will change. The lady can’t really hate her if she doesn’t really know her. Tell her to tough it out, keep her chin up and dive in! I bet she’ll do just fine!

Of course she needs to suck it up. Let her prove that she can be competent. Better to start now. What is the worst that can happen? She should talk to her boss without excuses and appoligies. Just tell her she is now ready to get to work.

I’ve never heard of an internship requiring you to buy your own computer…but the very best thing to advise your friend to do is to go talk to the professor at length about the situation. It sounds like your friend may not have been upfront in her description of the situation…I mean, if the internship required a laptop, your friend communicated that she needed to take out a loan for one and would therefore start the internship late, and now the boss is mad…well, something doesn’t add up. Did she not tell the boss that she didn’t have a laptop at first, or not tell her she was going to start late? What did the boss complain about exactly? At any rate, if she was upfront with the boss and the boss complained, then the boss is unreasonable and your friend should talk to her professor. If she was not upfront with the boss, then she still needs to talk to her professor and admit whatever mistakes she may have made, and ask for the professor’s advice. After all, the professor is the one that will be grading her! I hope that helps!

Here are the points that I gather:
1. Needs the internship.
2. Wasn’t exactly prepared, but has the stuff now.
3. Boss lady knows that she has a late start.
4. Part of required work for graduation.
5. Your friend is sensitive.

Your friend is scared. That is fair. I would be scared too I think. But it isn’t that big of a deal and she can earn her boss’s respect by doing the job she is required to do now. Lots of students are ill prepared for the real world.

Recommend sucking it up…showing up. Doing the work and after a day or so….the embarassment will be over.

There are lots of awkward times in life. This is the first that she needs to cope with. Plus, it teaches her to problem solve.

Tell her to just do it…and she will be glad she did.

How tough are laptop screens?

I’ve banged mine a bit from behind while carrying it a few times and I’m just a little worried about banging it too much and it breaks. It’s a Toshiba and I’ve had it for 17 months. I just, ugh, I get all worked up when I do so, I don’t bang it too hard, but sheesh.

They are not very tough. They wont take much rough treatment. I replace a lot of laptop screens for people. I had one where this ladies 14 year old son got mad at the laptop and slammed the lid shut and ruined the screen. I had another one where the lady said she ruined the screen by placing her thumb on the screen while opening the laptop lid. The hard drive wont take much of a jar or rough treatment either.

The clam shell (exterior) is usually fairly durable but the actual laptop display side is pretty fragile. Repeatedly banging the clam shell will eventually crack it if you bang it hard enough it can flex enough to damage the display. If you can’t stop from banging it you might want to glue some thin neoprene to the shell to protect it or buy a neoprene slip case for it. A slip case is a very simple bag with a Velcro’d flap.

You’ll have to replace the entire keyboard.

Depending on how old the laptop is you should be able to order a replacement directly from HP. It will probably run you about $ 20-$ 40 if you install it yourself and anywhere from $ 60-$ 150 to have someone else do it (if not under warranty).

If you have any mechanical skills it’s pretty easy to do yourself, you just have to undo a couple of screws and unplug the old one. You should be able to find a guide for it online.

Well they have many shock proof laptops out there but if you just want a laptop that wont bend when you pick it up, get a macbook pro. The bottoms are made out of only 2 pieces of solid aluminum making the laptop very rigid. The screen is made out of aluminum and glass

the best way is just to google for rugged laptops. though it really depends on what you are using it for. If it is for school, and u just want something durable, then a solid dell should be fine.

also, a solid state drive would be more appropriate, because they are safer if dropped, this is because they have no moving parts. they are also MUCH faster.

I wold go with a dell, but if u really want somthing a little more hardcore, then u will have to search google for sturdier stuff. Some laptops are water resistant, shock resistant, etc.

DONT buy a thin laptop!!! especially not a mac. 1st off, macs are overpriced, so u would get a bad deal, 2nd, they are thin and therefore snap much easier.

toshiba tablet release date get I’ve been having a bit of fun with ROMS for the N64 lately, but it’s tough to get the buttons in the right configuration for best use.

Are there any game controllers that can plug into my laptop and be used to play Nintendo 64 ROMs? Or, even more specifically, are there any N64 controllers that are made to plug into laptops?

The xbox controller is really compatible.

As for n64 I am not sure. But the xbox and xb360 controllers both can connect via USB. The originals require molding them but work quite well.

Yes the best one is a wired 360 controller its very very good make sure its wired. Youll have to get the dirvers for either the 32 bit or 64 bit system on microsoft.com but it works perfectly. One side note you can actually plug up four controllers and play with four people if you want me and my buddies used to play n64 roms while deployed.
